SAGINAW — This time last year Michigan voters passed a law legalizing the sale of medical marijuana. Now Saginaw City Council says they will be getting ready to set up guidelines for its use during their next City Council meeting.

Before new laws are enforced city council members are giving residents like Angela Parkes the chance to voice their opinions. "I don’t think it’s fair if a person is sick and a doctor a legal doctor has prescribed them marijuana. I think they should be able to have it if they’re actually sick," says Parkes.

Council Member Amos O’Neal says guidelines will be set to prevent people from taking advantage of marijuana. "You don’t want to have a free for all opportunity for whatever comes in your community. You want to have it zoned right and you want to have the ordinance in place so if there are some things that we have to deal with it would be enforceable," says Mr. O’Neal.

Saginaw resident Jacob Webster agrees. "There are going to be people to take advantage of it, but if it’s going be helpful they should have it," says Webster.

Council members say before they set the rules for medical marijuana in Saginaw, they will first take a lesson from the history books. "A lot of things were developed over the years where we can oversee problems and complications that arise when attempting to zone this. We’ve seen the attempts from other communities and problems and I guess we learn from the mistakes of others to that degree," says City Attorney Thomas H. Fancher.

The deadline to have all medical marijuana zoning ordinances in place for Saginaw is June 3oth. City leaders say this should allow them the time they need.
