ERIC BAERREN: Cost of drug war keeps adding up

Sports Marijuana News and Cannabis Talk!

When we last left the War on Drugs, the casualty du jour was a middle aged sports columnist from Grand Rapids named David Mayo. Mayo, for those unfamiliar, was arrested earlier this year after police found marijuana plants in his house. He was charged with possession with intent to deliver based not on an actual accusation that he was selling drugs, but on the sheer number of plants found in his home.

Last week, coincidentally also in Grand Rapids, the War on Drugs added to its rolls another casualty. Derek Copp, a 20-year-old student at Grand Valley State University, was shot in the chest during a search of his apartment…

…The direct price you and I pay for each of these is $10,000 apiece, which is the average for marijuana convictions. In the case of Copp, the price is very likely going to be much, much higher and because state and federal money help fund regional anti-drug units, it’s money that you and I get to pay in the form of income, sales and other taxes…

This column was a good read. :)
